Black Rebel Motorcycle Club fought their nerves and the usual Webster Hall aggravations and put on a serious show on Saturday night. Go forth and enjoy my full review (and pics) on Stereogum.
Elefant's Diego Garcia was obviously photogenic and hilarious -- I laughed and smiled a lot, and I don't do that much at shows these days. Their standouts-"Uh Oh Hello," "Misfit" and "Lolita"-were definite moments when music and showmanship came together; at other times I felt like I was watching the "Greatest American Idol Contestant Ever" work the stage and ooze charismatic charm. For what it's worth, he seems incredibly genuine and cool. He came out between sets and randomly (but very earnestly) extended his hand and said "Hi, I'm Diego," and discussed the show with four of five of us up front. It's difficult not to like the guy.
I hit the Plus One Afterparty hoping that the rumors of a BRMC appearance had credence; my nocturnal ways were rewarded when The Morning After Girls took the stage around 1am with Peter Hayes. After two songs with TMAG, Peter stood alone at the mic with an acoustic guitar, performing "Complicated Situation" and "Fault Line;" we heard both earlier at Webster, then somewhat compromised by the 80's party music seeping from the floorboards below. Good times.
The rest of The Morning After Girls set was surprisingly good, coming across much better than on the record I heard a few weeks ago. With a wall of guitar sound directed by driving rock drumming, The Girls make perfect BRMC disciples, complete with black outfits and dead eyed stares. For shoegazer fans, for sure.
