Turning down free performances -- particularly by bands that can actually play -- remains a weakness, so I readily agreed when Jerry offered his +1 to me for Kunek's Mercury Lounge set last night. After a few "specials" at Cherry Tavern, we braved the arctic gales and proceeded to the warmth of the (surprisingly packed) Merc.
Kunek is an art-rock six piece hailing from Oklahoma. Jerry-as-mock-music-writer tends to speak of them in terms of "windswept soundscapes pastures;" I tend to speak of them in terms of "Radiohead." The band's well performed, dramatic set (complete with synchronized lights!) served as a touching point for a discussion on derivation and influence. Though neither of us take issue with bands closely resembling others in sound (e.g. Editors and Interpol), any discussion of Kunek must begin with identifying the Yorke connection, and proceed to examine whether they successfully distinguish themselves. Their live set, which I enjoyed, spoke to their talent; decide the rest for yourself (Yeti-hosted mp3s). Be sure to head over for Jerry's (undoubtedly humorous and more entertaining) take on the set.
Next on the agenda was Rockwood Music Hall for The Picture's "acoustic" set (which, as Yeti identified, really only means "sans drums"). I had never seen a show at Rockwood before. Approximately the size of a two bedroom East Village apartment, calling it a "Hall" is generous. I loved it; the vibe and acoustics of the room are beyond reproach. I think I'll be spending many more nights there...
I had last seen The Picture perform a convincing opening set for Editors at Mercury Lounge in January, and last night was true to form. Though drums were missed, I found myself singing along to the Brit-pop stylings of "Bright Side" and "Patterns," songs that I had heard just once a few weeks back; that's good writing, folks. Head to their Myspace for a listen, and be sure to catch The Picture during their Wednesday night residency at Pianos in March. Definitely worth your night.
UPDATE: As advertised, Jerry's humorous take on Rockwood and The Picture.
how do I write a funny review about them? i tried, and failed. i hang my head in shame.

I'm disappointed. I built you up man. What happened, The Picture weren't worthy of a mention?
