Something would feel wrong if the guys who penned a song as infectiously whimsical as "Be Gentle With Me" weren’t juvenilely entertaining, and perhaps that’s why everything about The Boy Least Likely To’s first States side performance felt just right. After a full night of good sets (I was at the fantastic Metric/Islands show at Webster mere minutes before) and the spotty acoustics of R&R, I was prepared to cut the The Boy some slack; happily, I found that I didn’t need to.
MP3 Masala: The Boy Least Likely To - "Be Gentle With Me"
The Boy Least Likely To’s finest songs sounds like they were written by wry British elementary school teachers, overflowing with childish sensibility but well past adolescence. In the VI Spotlight piece on the band I said that their music would "take you to a place where your inner hipster and inner playschooler can finally agree on an album," and their R&R set -- replete with laughter, cupcakes and recorders -- perfectly fit the bill.
I'm not sure how I feel about the entire album, but the band's performance was good enough to get me to listen again. See them if you can, but wait until they’re done with James Blunt.
