Ryan Adams Shaves (And Joins Jesse Malin @ Mercury Lounge Last Night)

I swung by Mercury Lounge early last night to catch Emily Easterly's early set opening for Jesse Malin. I like the direction Emily's writing is taking, and I really love her drummer. I mean that in every way. His name is Sarab. He's particularly close to me. (Hint: he's Indian. And we have the same mother.)

Ryan Adams was there speaking with Sarab before the show, and he mentioned that he'd stick around to play a few with Jesse. As always, see Stereogum for my "real" post.

So rather than follow our other lead on Norah at Rockwood (see Vegan's post, he was there -- I figured I could skip 'cause she wouldn't be in fishnets this time), we bit the bullet and bared an entire set of Jesse. Let's just say it was a long night.

But man do I love Ryan Adams. He may have only sung a few notes. But they were some cool ass notes. He's limping these days and rockin' a cane. I'm smelling three albums about odd gaits in '06.

Anyone know who Malin's back-up band was?

whats the cane about? what did he do now?

Malin's back up band consisted of Christine Smith (Piano, Vox), Sam Yaffa (Bass), Paul (drums, played for Iggie Pop), and I don't know the guitar players name, but he was awesome!

The band (particularly Christine and that guitar player) was really good. And I have no idea what that cane was about. Cane or no cane, still the man.

was the guitar player Justin Lomery? If so, he's an amazing player.
